The land behind Koycegiz goes up quickly and the tracks that climb it are the reason this trip exists. It is dusty, noisy and not remotely serene, and children tend to rate it the best day of the week.

The exact route changes with the season and the state of the tracks, but the shape does not: up through the pine, a stop in a village, cold river water at some point, and the view back down over the delta before the run home.
The route, stop by stop
- Up into the hillsMost of the morning
Unsurfaced tracks through pine and sweetgum. Open jeep, so you will finish the day the colour of the road.
- A village stopAbout 30 minutes
Tea, a shop and the chance to stand on ground that is not moving. What is actually open depends on the day and the season.
- The riverAbout an hour
Water straight off the mountain, shallow enough to stand in and cold enough that you will not stand in it long. This is also where the water fights happen, and they are not optional in any meaningful sense.
- LunchAbout an hour
Usually at a river restaurant with the tables set out under trees. Included, and extremely welcome by that point in the day.
- The ridgeAbout 20 minutes
The view back down over Koycegiz, the delta and the sandbar. It is the one moment of the day when everybody goes quiet.

Be honest with yourself about the road
This is several hours on unsurfaced tracks in a vehicle with no suspension worth the name. If you have back trouble, it is not the day for you and we would rather say so now.
Seat choice helps a little. Over the rear axle is the worst of it and directly behind the cab is the best, so make your case when you get in rather than after the first hour.
The water is part of the deal
You will be soaked, and it is not accidental. Buckets, water pistols and the jeep alongside are all involved, and there is no dignified way to opt out once the convoy is moving. If that reads as fun, this is your day. If it reads as an ordeal, take a boat.

Do we get wet?
Yes. That is not an accident of the itinerary.
Is it suitable for a five-year-old?
Usually yes and they usually love it. It is a long, rough day, so tell us the ages first.
What happens if it rains?
In season it rarely does. If it does, the jeeps go anyway and the tracks become considerably more interesting, which some of the party will enjoy more than others.
Can we do it privately?
A jeep for your own party can be arranged. It removes the convoy, and with it most of the water fighting, so be sure that is what you want.
